Compositive education places the arts and music front and center, rather than shoving it aside in favor of test preparation or rote learning.

Research studies have found that

  • Music and artistic programs can improve children’s achievement and performance in other domains
    • A 2004 study demonstrated that that children who participated in music lessons (i.e., keyboard and voice lessons) demonstrated significant improvements in IQ scores and achievement compared to their counterparts who were in drama lessons and did not participate in music lessons.
    • A study of Chinese students in Hong Kong found some evidence that musical aptitude was associated with verbal-linguistic, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and visual-spatial self-rated intelligences.
  • Musical skills (i.e., music perception) are associated with phonological awareness and reading development among young children, according to one study.
  • Elementary school students who participated in academic music instruction that taught students fractions using music demonstrated greater levels of understanding of both music notation and fraction computation.
    • There was also a significant positive impact on music notation, fraction computation, and fraction concepts among low-performing students.
