Materialism, especially in children, interferes with overall emotional function and increases the risk of mental health issues. 

The vast amount of marketing aimed at young consumers has created the most materialistic generation in history and threatens their healthy development and emotional well-being. Materialism among this population has been linked to a variety of mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Fortunately, a new study from the University of Illinois at Chicago finds that there’s a strong inverse connection between gratitude and materialism—by encouraging the one, you can reduce the tug of the other.
